My best memory of my Grandma Leila (other than her chasing me around trying to give me hugs and kisses) was one thing she always said:
"You can't have a relationship with the weather!"
I didn't really understand it then, but over the last 15 years, now I do.
Growing up I always wanted to live in the warm weather.
When I was finishing up Chiropractic college, I did in internship at a clinic in Cary, North Carolina right outside of Raleigh. Raleigh was always on the list of top places to live at the time (and it still might be).
One of the main reasons I picked that location was the weather.
It so happened that the doctor I was doing the internship with wanted to sell his practice. So after graduating, I bought it!!
From 2000 to 2006 I lived in North Carolina and the weather was GREAT!
In that time, I also got married, had two little girls, and enjoyed the hot weather.
BUT, we didn't have any family or good friends close by who, for the most part, were all back in Michigan and Illinois.
We met some really nice people and neighbors but it just never felt like home.
But the weather was GREAT!
Plus, we knew that if we wanted to have a third child, we wanted to have our family around.
In October 2005, one of my good friends got married in Michigan and when we got back to North Carolina after our trip, my wife and I were sitting on the couch.
I asked her if she ever thought about moving back home. I NEVER thought she did because she loved the hot weather even more than I did. I NEVER thought she would say "yes," but she did!
When we were at the wedding, with our friends and family, it made us realize that the relationships we made and the family we have are far more important than the weather.
The weather is getting nice now so maybe I should've written this article in the dead of winter when most people are complaining about the harsh Michigan winters.
When many Michiganders were moving out of Michigan for a better life, we were actually moving back in to create a better life.
And you can't create a great life without great relationships!
